This is the feature request that started to discuss in the nextcloud community chat before. Here we want to start a public discussion about that.
Feature
Description
categories for links in the side menu.
Lets show the links to apps in columns. Each column for a categorie. So there are maybe categories like communication, media, organise...
Short mock is attached.
Lets have some favorite app-links in the top bar as default. But not a long list, just the favorites choosen by the user for quick access.
Benefits
If a nextcloud instance have many apps installed, the navigation is confusing. On small mobilephones, I can not see all links without scrolling. A human beeing can recognize max 5 items in one moment. If that are more items, the brain will split them in groups and recognize these. Thats why it is a good idea to have lists with only max 4 or 5 items.
That brings me to the requested features obove.
Hello,
What happend when a category contains only one app?
What happend when an app is in several categories?
hello, cool screenshots!
well, i think you should only use the first categorie. to use multible categories makes it to big and confusion.
I see two ways to handle categories with only one link. first is just that is okay. to avoid multiple categories with less links, maybe the use of categories should only be possible if more than 6 (?) apps are enabled. second, you could define categories that can go together. here maybe organisation and integration?
That was wireframes, but the attached picture is a screenshot :)
POC: https://kim.deblan.fr/~simon/videos/side_menu_issue22.mp4
When app has several categories, I only keep the one that contains the most applications.
The application
files
is not an app like others and does not have a category. That's why it's the first app.I have some troubles with translations. I don'k know how to translate apps names.
Not tested with a true smatphone and with a chrome browser.
awesome, I will show this in the community chat and push feedback here
I replaced the option to keep external sites in the top menu with a select list of apps.
A user can set applications in the top menu.
I still have issue with translations.

Issue with translations fixed.
You can test the release candidate: https://gitnet.fr/deblan/side_menu/releases/tag/v1.8.0-rc2 (not available from the app store).
v1.8.0 released :)
Thank you for this enhancement!
I love it and lets see if there are more that love it.
Relax with a coffee I bought for you...
